Paris, L'amour, Croissants, TGV and the Retromobile. The leading French exhibition for the classic car scene stands out for its opulence. If one wants to experience the full late Roman decadence of automobile construction, one has to travel to Paris at the beginning of February. This is where the really big cars are, the cars that fetch seven-figure sums at auctions. They are presented by the crème de la crème of European car dealers such as Kidston, Girardo, Fiskens, DK Engineering, and all the others.
Things were absolutely formidable at the Simon Kidston stand. A line formed, similar to when every teenager had to find out if all the Hollister stores were really black inside. There was no entry fee, and you didn't have to be a VIP. You just had to get in line and avoid attracting the attention of the security staff, and you were escorted inside the stand. The privacy created a relaxed environment once you were allowed to enter the stand and, at the same time, piqued the interest of the audience. Inside, the cars stood on pedestals like a McLaren F1, so that apart from maybe Louis Quatorze you didn't have to bend down to look inside.
